Peppered with some fascinating facts, and narrated in a blunt, irreverent fashion, this book is a must for knowing the real history of Britain, without the hearts and flowers.



Historically Britain has been a country on the edge—first of invasion, then of bankruptcy, then on the vulnerable front line of the Cold War, and later in the forefront of the great opening up of capital and migration.

I’m not a big history reader but as a Drama teacher and form tutor this is really informing my work with students and helping me to understand many events which I have always been aware of but never fully got to grips with, e.g.

I studied 20th Century history for my O-level, and grew up through much of this narrative, so the story of Britain's last 50+ years is very much the background to my life. This engaging volume tells the story of how the great political visions and idealisms of Victorian Britain came to be defeated by a culture of consumerism, celebrity, and self-gratification. There are tons of gems like that in a book you'll find hard to put down. No one will agree with everything he says, but reading this book is an enlightening experience. Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain.

Readable, profoundly researched and covering aspects of daily life - as the parts devoted to the pop scene - not found in any other history texts. Andrew Marr's The Making of Modern Britain (TV Mini-Series 2009) History. A book released by Marr accompanying the series and bearing the same name also details this period of history.

A must for anyone interested in politics and modern history. I just love the way Andrew Marr relates history. It explains how in each decade, political leaders found themselves confounded by the British people, who always turned out to be harder to herd than predicted.
