The entire platform is about as much as the HS mag weld conversion, ironically. It has no gas rings. The scope we were using was one of our regulars that we use for rifle testing. The other thing that always draws comment on these tactical HS Precision stocks is the palm swell. With recoil well managed, accuracy well above average, and the rifle feeding smoothly from the magazine, we figured it would do well on our 300 yard head shot test. “Piston guns don’t suffer from heat fatigue or as severe a heating and cooling cycle. Beyond that, everything is pretty normal in regards to the Remington 700 action, trigger and floorplate. The Remington feels quite sloppy and not so smooth by comparison but given the reputation this rifle has managed to acquire throughout it’s history I’m sure it will work out fine. So now our test includes accuracy (in MOA), time to fire three rounds (in seconds) and Energy at 300 yards (in Ft-Lbs). Even though the suppressor was sized to fit a 6.8 SPC bore, it performed just as well on the 5.56mm carbine. My son, Luke, and I ran more than 250 rounds through the 10.5-inch-barreled R5 RGP over 10 minutes. Fast forward 20 years and the 5R rifling has now become a major selling feature on rifles and Remington is still making 5R rifles, but they are not the same surplus M24 barreled versions.
