Now after reading the book while travelling back to back for three days and wrapping the last 20 pages this morning after reaching home, I am totally speechless. Reading books about Partition has never been easy. Highlights details of wilful inaction by the colonial administration in defusing the volatile situation until the tension reached threshold thereby tacitly allowing large scale massacre/ destruction. It tells the story of several characters, of Hindus and Muslims during that time's communal riots. The narrative style leaves one with questions about human tendencies. The co-existence of all these religions and identities have provided India with a rich culture and heritage, which forms the foundation for the socio-cultural growth of any nation. ‘‘Tamas’, written by renowned Hindi author Bhisham Sahni, is a story of the lives of common people caught in a conflict of identities. Still they help them to reach the village of their daughter. Tamas, as the name suggests, portrays the darkness of an era, two nations, two religions, and overall mankind. Bhishm Sahni,is an account of sufferings of people during a time when India was fighting for her independence and rise of Pakistan was inevitable. The writer was a thoughtful and clever man. The fight against the British would have been much easier had the millions of people who died in riots, focused on fighting the British instead of their own kith and kin.In the last chapter of the book, a Hindu property dealer is shown trying to seal a deal with a Muslim who wants to move out of a Hindu colony. In hindsight, Partition was enforced in a thoughtless, naïve fashion. Story is about communal riots in villages/ small towns prior to independence {around 1942}. Enraged Muslims massacre scores ofSet in a small-town frontier province in 1947, just before Partition, Tamas tells the story of a sweeper named Nathu who is bribed and deceived by a local Muslim politician to kill a pig, ostensibly for a veterinarian.
Sahni witnessed the partition of India, thus the book is based on his personal experience. Though this meant peace had finally come and the riots would end, the duped villagers falling for this act and believing the British were finally saving them (and not, you know, being the cause of the riots in the first place, and had the power to stop it anytime they wanted) was nauseating to read.
