I know how to make all the right decisions, but in no way does that make me or anyone else here exempt from being a victim of crime. Common sense, respect, understand the culture and have a good understanding/speak Spanish; you will be fine. Colombians are lovely open people and Colombian women are the best. Yes there are dangerous cities and places in the US, but aren’t they all black areas anyway, with the same mentality as colombiams.. ie rob a white person as they call us soft easy targets, but the truth is it’s them who are savage killers who will not hesitate to kill you.. murder rate in Jamaica over 1600 in a year with population less than 3 million… murder rate in Chicago 2016 over 1000 and maybe someone can tell me how many white men were behind THAT? The beaches aren’t great though.Colombia is ok if you are a rich gringos and can afford to stay in wealthy areas and gated complexes. Act sensibly and enjoy the warmth and kindness of the vast majority of the Colombia people. Colombia is a safe country to travel so long visitors stay on a tourists trail and stick to certain unwritten rules such as not flashing valuables or not wondering streets in big cities late at night.. You've likely heard Colombia is dangerous, and that travel to Colombia is deadly. The amazon region is fine AS LONG AS you're in a GOOD hotel or with an AUTHORIZED tourist guide. Don't be so arrogant to think you won't be a victim -- there are also really smart criminals out there. I would say Colombia is much more dangerous than Rio de Janeiro's favelas because the Colombians use drugs and all kinds of "sophisticated" techniques to spike your drinks in bars and discos, or it could be a street beggar, or a senior/handicapped person, and so on. There is a reason why it's such a popular travel destination. It is imperative, when traveling to a strange place, that individuals use caution and a bunch of common sense. So what's the point.I have a friend who just got back from Medellin,he loved it,had a good time,stayed in the tourist areas,so he had no problems,told me he would go back anytime,that the people were very friendlyI was thinking about visiting Cartagena Columbia to see if this will be a good place to retire versus Marbella, Spain.Cartagena is not safe a US judge was kidnapped just last year and his family had to pay 33k to get him out. ... Other high-risk destinations closer to home include Honduras and parts of Colombia… Stop generalizing a whole country on one bad experience in a super touristy place.You never asked where I have been. Big on beaches, rumba, and rum. Avoid Calle 9 area at night, as there are lots of muggings in that area. Each of these zones are upper class and offer a decent level of safety.If you rent an apartment with a doorman in one of the neighborhoods listed above, you’ll find Colombia to be a fairly safe place.I prefer apartments over hotels in Colombia, as they offer a greater level of privacy while being significantly cheaper than a hotel with similar amenities.The doorman is essential, as he’ll ensure no rift raft comes anywhere near the area you sleep at night.Most people who end up in grave danger in Colombia are basically looking for trouble.If you come down here to snort copious amounts of cocaine and shag poor hookers for pennies on the dollar, then you needn’t be surprised when you end up in a sticky situation.And sticky situations in Colombia can easily become life or death.
